Peaky Blinders Movie Gets An Exciting Update
There has been talk of a Peaky Blinders movie for some time, and now it sounds like it might actually happen. Creator Steven Knight told Birmingham World that series star Cillian Murphy, who just won an Oscar for Oppenheimer, is “definitely” going to be in the movie. Not only that, but Knight said the plan is to begin filming in September in Digbeth, England.
Earlier this year, Knight said he was wrapping up the script and that the plan was to begin filming in 2024. There is no word yet on if the Peaky Blinders film will get a theatrical release or if it will come to streaming, or potentially both.
Murphy played crime boss Thomas Shelby for the BBC show’s 10-year run, and said he’d return if there was a script. He previously said he had “always” thought he could come back if there was more story to tell. The show has been turned into a few games–including a VR version–and even a ballet called The Redemption of Thomas Shelby. But this will be the first feature film.
In terms of the story, the movie is expected to be set during World War II, and Knight has said that it will be “the same but different” to the series, telling viewers to “expect the unexpected.”
The Peaky Blinders TV series took place in the aftermath of World War I, with Thomas’ shellshock playing a major narrative role in the crime drama.
In addition to Murphy, the cast of Peaky Blinders included Helen McCrory, who passed away in 2021 before the show’s final season; Paul Anderson, Tom Hardy, Finn Cole, Joe Cole, Sam Claflin, Anya Taylor-Joy, Aidan Gillen, Sam Neill, Adrien Brody, Paddy Considine, Annabelle Wallis, and others. All six seasons are streaming on Netflix in the US.
In addition to the Peaky Blinders movie, Knight is writing the upcoming Star Wars movie that brings back Daisy Ridley as Rey.
