Grandia HD Collection Finally Coming to PlayStation and Xbox Consoles
The Grandia HD Collection are already available on Switch and PC and are now going to PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
Four years since the Grandia HD Collection was released for Switch and PC, the game is finally arriving on PlayStation and Xbox consoles. The Grandia HD Collection includes the first two titles in the franchise, Grandia 1 and Grandia 2, with revamped graphics, widescreen, and support for new languages.
Grandia was released during the golden era of JRPGs in the 90s. It was developed by Game Arts initially for the Sega Saturn but found a cozy home on the PlayStation when Sony published the game in North America. Grandia featured a romantically adventurous narrative focusing much more on the journey of its protagonists and party than on the outcome. It also introduced a distinctive combat system, blending turn-based and real-time decisions. The success of the series was enough to span four entries, two of which were remastered and distributed in the Grandia HD Collection.
Grandia HD Collection was initially announced only for Nintendo Switch and PC in 2019. Now, GungHo Online Entertainment America has announced that Grandia HD Collection will arrive on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on March 26 and will be compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The two Grandia games in the collection received the remaster treatment and now have modernized visuals, enhanced UI and sprites, widescreen support, and improved cinematics. Additionally, the new version supports different languages. Players can choose between Japanese or English audio and English, French, Japanese, Korean, German, and simplified and traditional Chinese texts.
Before GungHo officially announced the release of the Grandia HD Collection for PlayStation and Xbox, some eagle-eyed fans on the ResetEra forum spotted that trophies for both Grandia had appeared on sites like Exophase and TrueTrophies, suggesting that the console would soon receive the games. The question was whether they would come in the form of PlayStation 2 emulation, part of the PS Plus Premium package, or if it would be the remastered versions.
After the first two Grandia games, Square Enix took over and published the subsequent titles, Grandia Xtreme and Grandia 3, for the PlayStation 2. Although some more nostalgic fans would like these two titles to also receive an HD version, it probably won’t be from Square Enix. In 2004, GungHo Online Entertainment announced the acquisition of Game Arts, and with it, the Grandia IP.
