Echoes of the Fallen is out today, while The Rising Tide is due for a Spring 2024 release. Players can get both at a discount with a bundled Expansion Pass. After playing coy on potential expansions for Final Fantasy 16, which released in June, Square Enix has surprised fans by announcing that its first FF16 DLC would go live today. Echoes of the Fallen introduces a new storyline that takes place before FF16’s final battle. As strange crystals are unearthed, circulating on the black market, Clive and his team have to investigate an ancient weapon that has been re-awakened.
Echoes of the Fallen will also give players access to an iconic weapon from the Final Fantasy series, Cloud Strife’s buster sword, as announced on the PlayStation Blog. The new DLC expansions will also include new weapons and items, as well as increasing the game’s level cap for new and challenging battles.
The second new DLC announced today is The Rising Tide, which takes Clive and friends to a brand-new region. The trailer is somewhat less specific about the story that The Rising Tide will follow, instead showing off new landscapes, creatures, and monsters. The PlayStation Blog mentions that Rising Tide will see Clive face off against the legendary Eikon Leviathan.
Final Fantasy XVI was nominated for four awards at The Game Awards, where the new DLC was also revealed. It won in one category, best score and music, for composer Masayoshi Soken. You can check out all the other winners from tonight’s awards here.
